Honoring Professor Joe Beck

Professor Joe Beck

On Saturday, August 9th, beloved EHS Professor, Joe Beck, passed way after suffering a massive heart attack, a result of complications related to end stage renal disease.

Words cannot replace the stories, the feelings, or support provided by this man. Professor Beck served Eastern Kentucky University and many others up unto his last day. His contributions to the university, alumni, friends, family, the EHS profession, and many others will not be missed and will be greatly appreciated well into the future.

Professor Beck will be fondly remembered for his love of teaching and for his devotion to students. He joined the EHS faculty in 1995 and played a key role in the rapid growth and lofty national reputation of the program. A gifted storyteller in the classroom, he was always available outside of class to help his students in any way possible. They never forgot Professor Beck's advocacy and acts of kindness, typically staying in touch with him long after graduation.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions for the Professor Joseph Beck Scholarship Fund in memory of Professor Joseph Beck, c/o EKU Foundation, 521 Lancaster Avenue, CPO 19, Richmond, KY  40475. Online gifts are also encouraged.  Information regarding online contributions can be found at the following website created to honor Professor Beck's memory.  http://environmentalhealth.wix.com/joebeck

The Beck Family in concert with the University is actively working to identify a date and location for a Celebration of Life ceremony that will attempt to provide the opportunity to reflect upon the Life and Character of Professor Beck. As more details become available, we will strive to inform all of Professor Beck's former students, friends, colleagues, and family.

On behalf of his devoted wife, Sue Beck, and the EHS Department, we appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
